1. Before the season (do this now)
- Trim dead/overhanging branches near the home (non-structural) & haul off yard debris
- Shore up fences, gates, sheds, pergolas — they fail first
- Clear gutters, downspouts & yard drains
- Fit storm shutters or pre-cut board-up panels
- Photograph property (exterior, roof from ground, interior) for insurance
- Caulk, seal & paint exterior surfaces before the rain
- Locate your water shut-off
- Build a kit: water, batteries, meds, documents
- Book pre-season board-up, shore-up & debris haul early

2. When a watch or warning is issued (48–72 hrs out)
- Install shutters or board-up
- Bring in / secure outdoor furniture, grills, planters, trash cans
- Clear drains one more time
- Fill the dump trailer with loose debris & haul it
- Charge devices & power banks
- Photograph the final secured state
- Park vehicles away from trees

3. After the storm passes
- Stay clear of downed power lines — call the utility / a licensed electrician
- Document all damage with photos BEFORE you clean up
- Tarp roof leaks as a temporary fix (roof replacement needs a licensed contractor)
- Haul debris & destroyed materials
- Triage fences, decks & remove board-up
- Clean up interior water intrusion fast to prevent mold
- Get on the post-storm repair list early

When should I start hurricane prep in Broward?
Before June 1. Pre-season is when tree trimming, fence shore-up, gutter clearing, debris haul, and shutter fitting should happen — and when crews still have open slots. Waiting until a storm is named means higher cost and a longer wait.
Do you board up homes before a storm?
Yes — plywood or panel board-up, shutter install, securing loose items, and drainage clear-out, with priority callbacks on advisory days. Book early in the season.
