Test for asbestos first — non-negotiable
Popcorn texture from before the mid-1980s can contain asbestos, which is dangerous to disturb. Send a small sample to a lab (cheap and quick) before you scrape anything. If it’s positive, stop — that’s abatement by a licensed pro, not a weekend job. This is the step people skip and shouldn’t.
Prep the room like a pro
Empty the room or sheet everything in plastic, drop the floor, kill the power to ceiling fixtures and cover them, and tape plastic up the walls. Popcorn removal is a messy, wet job; the cleanup is 90% of the misery, and prep is how you avoid it.
Soak and scrape
