How to Clean Your Gutters Safely
Ladder safety comes first
More people get hurt on the ladder than on the gutter. Stable, level footing; three points of contact; and never reach past your hip — climb down and move the ladder instead. Two-story? That’s a job to hand off, not to risk a fall over.
Scoop, bag, flush
Gloves on, scoop the debris into a bag hung from the ladder, then run a hose through the trough toward the downspout. If water backs up, the downspout’s clogged — flush it from the bottom or tap it loose until it runs free.
Check while you’re up there
Look for loose or sagging hangers, rust spots, rotted fascia, and downspouts dumping toward the house instead of away. Catching these now is cheaper than the water damage they cause later.
